Does it matter if I don't know what an API is? Should a business analyst be able to run a SQL query? Is someone else meant to be performing system tests? Do we need to understand how generative AI actually works? Will knowing how to code help my career? Is everyone else more technical than me?

Business analysis professionals can often find themselves confused by how much technical knowledge and ability they should posses. Job vacancies can contain all sorts of wild demands, and the boundaries of our role can often feel a little vague and fuzzy!

In this interactive session, we'll examine the extent to which BAs need to understand different aspects of technology:

  • Basic tools of the job
  • Data (structures, storage, and insights)
  • Developing and deploying solutions
  • Technology ecosystems (hardware, networks, architecture)
  • Hot issues in technology today

During this discussion, attendees will conduct live research into what industry bodies and BA certifications demand, look at what recruiters are asking for in vacancies out there today, and compare what we're actually doing in our day-today analaysis work.

Note that for this session participants will be invited to collaborate on a Miro board to capture our findings. If you've not used Miro before, don't worry - we'll share a link that will work in your web browser (but it's best to use a laptop or desktop PC!).

Stu Mullinger is a business analysis consultant in Bristol, and founder of Better Business Analysis. He's been a BA for nearly 20 years, working predominantly in the Legal sector. He specialises in aligning business operations with strategic goals and shaping programmes of change, and is also something of a process modelling nerd.

Stu is also IIBA UK's Communities Director for Wales, the South West, and the Midlands, leading a fantastic team of fellow volunteers to promote the profession, run events, and help BAs develop their skills and connect with their community. He runs our regular Brown Bag drop-in sessions where he gently shepherds the discussion each week.

In his spare time, Stu dabbles in computer game design, plays the piano with more enthusiasm than talent, and loves to travel.
