Business Intelligence - an open discussion

The perception of data as a valuable asset is increasing amongst business leaders. Equally, the demand for business users to easily access, manage and analyse data is on the rise either as part of a project or as a project in itself. So what is the BA role on data projects?

This session, led by Chris Pilling, is an interactive debate about the skills, challenges and remit of the Business Analyst amidst the growing importance of data and business intelligence.

Chris Pilling is the Customer Data Manager at Ordnance Survey, a role he proudly describes as combining his skills and experience into one role taken from over 6 years of Business Analysis experience in Aviva and Ordnance Survey and system development prior to that. His current responsibilities include customer data management, CRM and data analysis for marketers.

The Indispensable BA and the Surprising Truth: You Work in Sales!

Business analysis is an essential discipline for organisational success. Our discipline spans not just projects, but also the definition of strategy and much more. As organisations mature, BAs are often seen as internal consultants acting as a liaison amongst stakeholders and our scope for engagement widens. As this happens, the skill-set and capabilities required by BAs subtly shifts. We might not be guaranteed early engagement on every project and proving our worth becomes essential. The art of sales - building awareness and interest in the holistic nature of the consultant analysis services we provide - becomes paramount.

In this presentation, Adrian Reed explores the importance of softer "sales" skills, processes and techniques, avoiding the clichéd "shiny-teeth-and-cufflinks" sales approaches that we all dislike.

Adrian Reed is President of IIBA UK, and a true advocate of the analysis profession. In his 'day job', he works as Principal Consultant at Blackmetric Business Solutions, where he provides business analysis consultancy and training solutions to a range of clients in varying industries.
